Member chat and community app for an international honour society, integrated with its CRM
An academic honour society with members and chapters in many countries wanted one place for its members to talk, share knowledge and find mentors. Ethora supplied the chat engine and a white-label iOS and Android app, and we connected it to the society’s HubSpot member records.

This project ran in 2020 to 2022 on the early version of the Ethora engine, then called the Dappros Platform. Everything described here is part of today’s Ethora Chat SDK and platform, rebuilt and extended since.
Overview
A society that already knows its members
![]()
The customer is the Golden Key International Honour Society, which recognises high-achieving university students through chapters around the world. Its app, GK Connect, was built as a social space for members and for students interested in joining: knowledge sharing, mentorship, and connections between members worldwide.
The challenge. Organisers, teachers and students needed one shared space across chapters, campuses and countries. The society’s member records already lived in its CRM (HubSpot) and website. A community app had to recognise those members without asking them to create and remember yet another account, keep members-only spaces for members, and still welcome prospective members. It also had to work for in-person and online events, where a room is most useful in the minutes after a session ends.
The approach. The app ran on the Ethora engine for chat, profiles, push and sign-in, shipped as a white-label app under the society’s brand. The custom part was small: a membership check against HubSpot and the rules that decide which rooms a verified member sees.
Requirements
What the society needed, and how Ethora met it
Each requirement is tagged by what came from the Ethora engine and what we built for this project.
Sign-in without a new password
Members signed in with Facebook, Google, Apple or MetaMask. Name and photo were imported from the social account, so a new member had a profile from the first screen.
Recognise existing members from the CRM
After signing in, a member added the email registered with the society. The app verified the address with a confirmation email, then checked it against the society’s HubSpot member list through the HubSpot API. A match unlocked the members-only rooms. Members could verify a second email, because the address on a social account is often not the one on the membership record.
Members-only spaces next to open ones
The chat list was split into Official rooms for verified members, Private conversations for direct messages, and Groups open to everyone, including students thinking about joining.
Rooms for events and chapters
Any room could be shared as a QR code: share, scan, join. At a summit or chapter event, attendees scanned the code on screen and were in the room, and the room stayed open for follow-up after the event ended.
Reasons to come back
Push notifications for replies and society news, social profiles to find mentors and business contacts, and peer recognition points: a joining bonus plus points that members could award each other for useful messages. The points were an internal gamification mechanism, not a currency.
Rich messaging that stays fast
Audio messages, media, direct messages and room reordering. Message history loads in pages of 20 as the user scrolls, so busy rooms open quickly on mobile.
Verifiable educational certificates
The engine’s built-in ledger API created an immutable trail for uploaded educational certificates, shown on the member’s profile, so a credential could be checked later without relying on the original issuer’s inbox.
Production quality before the stores
Separate production and QA environments, load tests of the API and chat with JMeter, and monthly API performance monitoring of production. The app went through monthly iOS and Android test rounds and a staged soft launch before wider release.
Inside the build
Membership you already have, sign-in you do not have to think about
The hardest part of a community app for an existing organisation is rarely the chat. It is identity. Members already exist in a CRM, and asking them to create a parallel account loses the quieter half of the community before the first message.
The app solved this in two steps. Social sign-on removed the password: a member tapped Facebook, Google, Apple or MetaMask and was in. Adding their society email then linked that login to the membership record in HubSpot and opened the members-only rooms. The same pattern works with any CRM or member database that has an API, through Ethora’s white-label app and user API.
Deployment
Dedicated production and QA environments on AWS
The society ran on its own instances rather than a shared tenant, with monitoring on the production stack. Today the same architecture can be self-hosted on AWS or installed from a marketplace.
Where this stack runs
The outcome
One place for a society that lives across many campuses
The app soft-launched on Google Play in June 2021, starting with members in South Africa, with no crashes or significant UX issues reported, and followed on the App Store. The February 2022 release brought the full Ethora feature set to members: direct messages, audio messages, room reordering and faster history loading.
The pattern carries over to any membership organisation: alumni networks, professional bodies, associations and education providers whose members already live in a CRM.
FAQ
Can members sign in with their social accounts?
Yes. Ethora supports Google, Apple and Facebook sign-in alongside email, and profiles can import the name and photo from the social account.
Can we run members-only rooms and public rooms in the same app?
Yes. Rooms can be restricted to verified members, kept as private conversations, or opened to everyone, and the chat list can group them separately.
How do event attendees join the right chat room?
Share the room as a QR code. Attendees scan it on screen or on a printed card and join immediately, and the room stays available after the event.
Can the app be published under our own brand?
Yes. Ethora’s white-label chat app ships to the App Store and Google Play under your name, logo and colours, built on the React Native chat SDK.
