The honest short answer
Ethora vs Intercom: the honest short answer
Intercom is a customer service platform: the Messenger on your site, a shared inbox with ticketing, a help center, workflows and Fin, an AI agent that answers over chat, email, phone and other channels. Intercom is priced per seat, and Fin is billed per outcome, from $0.99 per resolved conversation. Ethora covers the AI agent part for your website and app: it answers from your website and documents, a person can join the same conversation, and it runs on the model you choose, on our cloud or on your own servers, with an open-source core and plans priced by monthly active users.
Stay with Intercom if
- You need a full help desk: shared inboxes, ticketing, a help center and workflow automation in one tool
- Your team answers email, phone, WhatsApp and SMS from the same inbox as website chat
- You want Fin to sit on top of an existing help desk such as Zendesk or Salesforce
Choose Ethora if
- The main job is an AI agent on your website or app, and you want a predictable plan price rather than a fee per resolution
- You need your own model, including a self-hosted one, and your data in a region or on servers you choose
- Chat is part of your product: SDKs for web and mobile apps, group rooms with AI agents, voice and video calls
Best for: Intercom for a support team that needs a complete help desk with an AI agent on top; Ethora for an AI agent on your own knowledge that you can own, self-host and build into your product.

Why teams switch
Why teams move their AI agent from Intercom to Ethora
Both will answer customer questions from your content. The reasons to switch are about how the bill grows, which model answers, where the data sits and what the chat can become.

An honest view
When Intercom is the better choice
We would rather you pick the right tool. Intercom is likely the better fit in these cases.
You need a help desk
Ethora has no ticketing system, shared email inbox or help center builder. If your support team works tickets all day, Intercom gives you those in one product.
Many channels in one inbox
Intercom handles email, phone, WhatsApp and SMS next to website chat. Ethora focuses on chat in your website and your own apps and does not offer those channels.
Workflows and outbound messages
Intercom includes a workflow builder, banners, tooltips and email campaigns. If proactive messaging and support automation are the main job, stay where those live.

Migration
Moving your AI agent from Intercom to Ethora
You do not have to move everything at once. You can start with the website AI agent and keep your existing help desk for tickets. A US mental health provider went live on Ethora the same day it signed up; see the AI website agent case studies.

Intercom alternative FAQ
What is a good alternative to Intercom Fin?
If what you want from Fin is an AI agent that answers from your own content, Ethora does that job with a model you choose per agent, including a self-hosted one through Ollama or vLLM. Its plans are priced by monthly active users, with no charge per resolved conversation.
Can Ethora replace Intercom’s help desk?
No. Ethora does not include a ticketing system, a shared email inbox, a help center builder or email, SMS and WhatsApp channels. It covers the AI agent and live chat on your website and in your own apps, where a person can join the same conversation. You can keep a help desk for tickets and use Ethora for the AI agent.
Can I use my own model, for example with Ollama?
Yes. Each agent can use a cloud model API such as OpenAI or a model you host through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as Ollama or vLLM. Our open example repository shows the setup with four environment variables; in our test a 3B model on a 4 vCPU, 8 GB CPU-only server answered short replies in 6 to 8 seconds.
Can a person take over from the AI?
Yes. A person can join the same conversation the visitor is having with the AI agent, and admins can read every widget conversation with its message history.
Is Ethora suitable for healthcare and other regulated teams?
Ethora is HIPAA and SOC 2 compatible, and a BAA is available on Enterprise and dedicated deployments. Whether a specific project is compliant depends on its configuration and hosting. Chats are encrypted in transit and at rest by default; end-to-end encrypted rooms are an optional per-app setting that is off by default.
