Chat Widget

The floating chat window on a website. A widget is a self-contained conversation UI, human or AI, embedded with a script tag or an iframe and ready in minutes.

General definition

A Chat Widget is the most common way chat reaches a website: a small launcher (often a chat bubble) in a corner of the page that opens a conversation panel. Behind it sits a hosted service: a human support desk, an AI assistant, a community chat or a sales bot. The site owner adds one snippet to the page; the widget loads its own code, connects to the backend and handles the conversation. Widgets are used for customer support, lead capture, documentation help and, increasingly, AI agents that answer from a knowledge base.

  • Script-tag embed: a loader script inserts the UI into the host page’s DOM; it can read page context but must isolate its styles, often with Shadow DOM
  • Iframe embed: the conversation runs on the vendor’s origin inside a frame; styles and scripts are fully isolated and the host page communicates through postMessage
  • Identity: anonymous visitors get a session; logged-in users can be identified with a signed token so the conversation follows them
  • Behaviour: open on click, or proactively after a trigger such as time on page or a specific URL

Good widgets are small on first load, respect the page’s Content Security Policy, work on mobile, are usable by keyboard and screen reader, and do not leak the host page’s data. Because the widget is third-party code running on your site, security teams look at where the script is served from, what the iframe is allowed to do, and how visitor data is stored, especially in healthcare and finance.

A widget is one delivery format for chat; the same backend usually also powers in-app chat inside a product, mobile apps and agent dashboards, which is where a full chat SDK comes in.

In the Ethora ecosystem

Ethora ships two widget paths. The embeddable AI assistant widget is one script tag, assistant.js with a data-app-id attribute, which loads an iframe-based assistant connected to an AI agent built in the AI SDK: RAG over your website and documents, a per-agent system prompt and model choice, and the Trust and Safety controls. A WordPress plugin on wordpress.org installs the same assistant without touching theme code.

For a fully branded chat experience the chat widget SDK uses the React chat component: one-to-one and group rooms, threads, reactions, read receipts, typing indicators, file sharing and real-time AI translation, themed from config and running against a managed, dedicated or self-hosted Ethora backend. Both paths share the same App, users and admin panel, so a support widget on the marketing site and chat inside the product can be one system.
