An open, decentralized standard for real-time messaging and presence, formerly known as Jabber. Ethora builds its Chat Protocol on top of XMPP, powered by ejabberd.

XMPP

General definition

XMPP — the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, formerly called Jabber — is an open, decentralized standard for real-time communication and presence. It is used mainly in chat and messaging apps, but also for IoT command transmission and online gaming.

XMPP supports presence indicators (online/offline status) and can enable video calls or screen sharing through WebRTC signaling. Continuously evolving since 1999, it is extended through XEPs (XMPP Extensions).

XMPP in the Ethora ecosystem

Ethora uses XMPP as its foundational protocol layer, building the Ethora Chat Protocol by combining standard XMPP with selected public XEPs and proprietary extensions developed in Erlang. The underlying engine is the ejabberd chat server, enhanced with custom Ethora R&D modifications.

This layer connects to Ethora’s API, AI agents, push notifications and enterprise features including HIPAA compliance and Trust & Safety tooling — all delivered through the Chat SDK and a self-hosted chat server option.
