Ejabberd (chat server)
A powerful open-source chat server developed by ProcessOne that powers individual and group messaging over the XMPP protocol.
General definition
Ejabberd is a chat application server that supports one-to-one and group conversations through the XMPP protocol. It is written in Erlang, a language purpose-built at Ericsson for communication systems, which gives Ejabberd its high fault tolerance and performance.
It is proven at scale — Facebook, WhatsApp, Nintendo Switch and BBC Radio have all used Ejabberd. On its own, however, it implements XMPP but lacks features many products need, such as user management, file attachments, push notifications, compliance and an admin dashboard.
Ejabberd in the Ethora ecosystem
Rather than deploy Ejabberd alone, Ethora adds custom extensions and its own Chat Protocol that wraps XMPP with business-focused features. Inside Ethora’s backend, Ejabberd is one core module alongside the business logic and API layers.
This lets client applications talk to Ethora over both REST API and XMPP — the same foundation the Chat SDK is built on.
