MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)

General definition

MMS was developed to overcome SMS’s 160-character text limit and its inability to carry binary media. When a sender attaches an image or video to a message, the content is uploaded to the carrier’s MMSC, which then sends a notification to the recipient. The recipient’s device downloads the media over a data connection.

• Images, GIFs, audio clips, and short video attachments
• Longer text than SMS (typically up to 1,600 characters)
• Delivery through the native messaging app with no separate download required
• Charged per message by many carriers, particularly for cross-carrier international delivery

MMS is widely supported but increasingly superseded by RCS, which delivers richer media without the size restrictions and cost model of MMS. For product builders, neither MMS nor RCS provides the control, branding, or compliance features that an in-app messaging SDK can offer.
