General definition

Message threads solve the noise problem in busy channels. When a message in a shared room sparks a sub-discussion, a thread groups all the replies together in a side panel or nested view, so the primary channel timeline stays readable while the detailed exchange is preserved.

• Thread participants can be notified independently from the main channel
• The thread is visible to all channel members but does not interrupt the main feed
• Threads can include their own reactions, file attachments and mentions

Threaded messaging is common in team communication tools (Slack, Teams) and increasingly in customer support, community platforms and SaaS products. It reduces context-switching: the main channel gives a high-level view of topics, and anyone who needs more detail opens the thread. Without threading, a busy channel becomes difficult to follow as multiple simultaneous conversations interleave.

The Ethora Chat SDK supports threaded replies within rooms. A reply sent to a parent message ID is stored and delivered as part of that thread, and the SDK components render the thread view on web, iOS and Android. Notification preferences for threads are handled independently so users are not overwhelmed by every reply in a busy room.
