The Firebase Chat Alternative Built For Chat
Firebase is a great backend. It is not a chat platform. If you have built messaging on Firestore and you are fighting query limits, read/write costs, and missing chat features, Ethora gives you real chat primitives on infrastructure you own.

The honest short answer
Ethora vs Firebase for chat: the honest short answer
Firebase is a general application backend. Firestore stores documents, bills per read, write, and delete, and runs only on Google Cloud. Chat built on it means implementing presence, typing, read receipts, reactions, threads, moderation, and search yourself, and paying per operation as usage grows.
Ethora is an open-source chat and AI SDK. Those features ship as standard, it self-hosts on every plan including free, pricing is flat, the UI is fully white-label, and AI agents run on the LLM you choose.
Stay with Firebase if
- Chat is a minor feature and Firestore already powers the rest of your app
- Your traffic stays inside Firestore’s free daily quota
- You want Google-managed infrastructure and never plan to self-host
Choose Ethora if
- Chat is a core product capability and you keep rebuilding chat features on a document store
- Read and write costs climb every time usage does
- You need self-hosting, data residency, HIPAA readiness, or AI agents inside chat
Best for: Firebase for apps where chat is incidental; Ethora for products where chat is the product.

Ethora vs Firebase: capabilities at a glance
What each platform offers on the eight questions teams ask when chat outgrows Firestore. Firebase facts come from Google’s own pricing and product documentation.
How to read this table
Firebase facts are taken from Google’s own Cloud Firestore pricing and product documentation, checked 24 September 2026. Pricing is described by model, not by rate, because rates change by region and plan; see Google’s pricing page for current numbers and our monthly Chat SDK pricing comparison for the chat vendors. Why teams switch from Firebase
Teams move to Ethora when Firestore starts being more than a database for their chat.
Firebase
Backend, not a chat platform
Ethora
Self-hosted SDK, AI-native
One SDK, six production-ready modules
Everything a chat product needs, working together, so nothing has to be reimplemented on top of a document database.
Chat & Docs Engine
1:1 and group chat, channels, read receipts, reactions, threads, file exchange, offline support, and audit logs. Encrypted in transit and at rest, with optional end-to-end encrypted rooms per app. Available across web, iOS, Android, and React Native.
AI Bots SDK
Multi-turn, context-aware agents inside your chat with memory, function calling, custom logic, and human escalation. Connect OpenAI, Claude, open-source models, or your own endpoint.
RAG Crawler
Point it at your website, docs, or knowledge base. It indexes everything so your AI answers from your own content instead of guessing.
Marketplace Chat SDK
Buyer-seller conversations with order-linked threads, seller presence, and dispute escalation, across Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento.
Chat Widget
A working chat or AI support experience on any website with a single script tag. About five minutes, no separate backend to build.
React UI Kits
React and React Native components that are themable from the start, so chat looks like part of your product rather than a separate app.
Your servers. Your data. Your rules.
With a Firestore-based architecture, your chat data lives inside Google’s managed infrastructure. With Ethora, the whole stack, from chat and AI to storage and audit logs, runs inside your perimeter: your VPC or private infrastructure, your data residency, your security controls. In regulated industries that is the difference between a questionnaire you can answer and one you cannot.
Bring your own LLM
Ethora does not make you build your AI layer around a single model provider. Connect OpenAI, Claude, open-source models, internal models, or custom endpoints, and change providers as your requirements evolve. Three things teams actually do with it:
Support deflection in-chat
An AI agent handles tier-1 questions around the clock inside the same chat your users already know, and escalates to a human when it matters.
RAG over your docs
The RAG Crawler indexes your content and gives agents something real to answer from. A useful assistant, not just a convincing one.
AI moderation
Flag, filter, or escalate content through your preferred model and policies before it reaches your team.
No LLM lock-in. Swap models in a config file without touching your chat logic.
Compliance-ready
Ethora ships with audit logs, encryption at rest, and encryption in transit: not as add-ons, as defaults.

Migration
From Firebase chat code to a real chat platform
Moving chat off Firestore does not mean rebuilding your product. The migration can happen incrementally.
Run both systems
Keep your existing Firebase chat running while you integrate Ethora, self-hosted or hosted by us, and pilot one channel or user group before any cutover.
Map your users
Connect existing accounts to Ethora users through your authentication or SSO setup. Firebase Authentication can remain the source of truth while Ethora handles chat.
Move channels and history
Map your Firestore conversations to Ethora channels and migrate message history according to your data model. The exact steps depend on how your collections and chat logic are structured.
Keep the rest of Firebase
Analytics, Hosting, and Cloud Messaging for push can stay exactly where they are. Ethora integrates with FCM for Android and web push.
Retire the Firestore chat layer
Once the new experience is validated, remove the Firestore-specific messaging code and the Cloud Functions that propped it up. We can scope the plan with you if you want help.
FAQ
Can I use Firebase for chat?
Yes. You can build basic messaging on Firestore with real-time listeners, collections, and Firebase Authentication. The trade-off is that your team implements the chat features itself: presence, typing indicators, read receipts, reactions, threads, moderation, search, and notification logic. As the product grows, that becomes a chat platform you maintain on top of a document database, billed per read and write. A purpose-built platform like Ethora ships those capabilities as standard.
Is Ethora cheaper than Firebase for chat?
At scale, it usually is. Firestore bills per document read, write, and delete, plus storage and network egress, and chat is operation-heavy because users constantly read and write messages and message state. Self-hosted Ethora has no per-operation charge: you pay for your own infrastructure, or a flat Business plan on our cloud. Actual savings depend on traffic, architecture, and how much custom chat code you maintain today.
Can I migrate my Firebase chat to Ethora?
Yes. Run both systems side by side, map existing accounts to Ethora users through your authentication or SSO setup, migrate channels and message history from your Firestore collections, then retire the Firestore-specific chat code. The exact path depends on your data model and which chat features you implemented.
Do I have to stop using Firebase completely?
No. Ethora replaces the part of Firebase that carries chat. Your application can keep Firebase Authentication, Analytics, Cloud Messaging for push, Hosting, or any other service that still fits. Ethora integrates with Firebase Cloud Messaging for Android and web push.
Can I self-host Ethora?
Yes, on every plan including free. Ethora runs on AWS, Azure, GCP, a private cloud, or on-premises, so chat data and AI inference stay inside the environment you control. Firebase runs only on Google’s managed infrastructure.
Does Ethora include AI bots?
Yes. The AI Bots SDK adds multi-turn conversational agents inside your chat, and the RAG Crawler indexes your website and documentation so agents answer from your own content. Connect OpenAI, Claude, an open-source model, or a custom LLM endpoint.
Can I use my own LLM?
Yes. Ethora is model-agnostic. Connect an external provider, an open-source model, or an internal endpoint, including self-hosted inference so prompts never leave your network. Swap models in configuration without touching your chat logic.
Is Ethora white-label?
Yes. Ethora ships without vendor branding. Use the native SDKs and React UI kits for a deeply integrated experience under your own brand, or the Chat Widget when you need a faster implementation.
