The honest short answer

Ethora vs Matrix (Element): the honest short answer

Matrix is an open, federated messaging protocol with homeservers such as Synapse and the Element client; it is a strong choice for a sovereign, end-to-end encrypted messenger that talks to other Matrix servers. Ethora is an open-source chat and AI SDK for putting messaging, calls and AI agents inside your own application, self-hosted or dedicated, with server-side archiving, audit trails and a Trust and Safety layer by default and end-to-end encrypted rooms as a per-app option.

Stay with Matrix if

  • You need a standalone messenger that federates with other organisations’ servers
  • End-to-end encryption on every room is the requirement and server-side supervision is not
  • Your users will live in Element or another Matrix client rather than inside your product

Choose Ethora if

  • Chat has to be a feature of your own web or mobile app, with your users, roles and data model
  • You must archive, search, export and moderate messages (healthcare, finance, insurance, public bodies)
  • You want AI agents in the rooms, grounded in your documents, on a model you host

Best for: Matrix for a federated, encrypted messenger between organisations; Ethora for embedded chat and AI in a product that must keep a compliance record.

Ethora

Embedded chat and AI SDK

Product shape
Matrix (Element) A protocol plus a messenger. Users get an account on a homeserver and talk through Element or another Matrix client. Embedding it inside your own app means building on the client SDKs and running a homeserver.
Ethora An SDK. Users are your users, created from your backend with no separate login; rooms, roles and data live inside your product on web, iOS, Android and React Native.
Encryption and supervision
Matrix (Element) End-to-end encryption is on by default in private rooms. That is the point of Matrix, and it means the server cannot search, moderate, export or recover those rooms.
Ethora Compliance archive by default: encryption in transit and at rest, retention, audit trail, Trust and Safety rules on every message. End-to-end encrypted rooms are a per-app switch for the cases that need them.
Operations
Matrix (Element) Synapse is a mature Python homeserver with a commercial Pro edition from Element; federation adds state resolution and replication work that single-organisation deployments do not need.
Ethora One stack for one organisation: API, ejabberd, MongoDB and media server as Docker containers, a Helm chart, cloud marketplace images, or a dedicated server run by Ethora under an SLA.
AI
Matrix (Element) Bots connect through the client-server API; AI agents, knowledge bases and model routing are things you build.
Ethora AI agents are participants in rooms, grounded in your documents, on a cloud model or one you host, with an MCP server so other agents can use the platform.

Your servers. Your data. Your rules.

The whole chat and AI stack runs inside your perimeter: on your AWS, Azure or GCP account, on-premises, or as a dedicated single-tenant deployment operated by Ethora. No federation to other servers unless you want it.

Compliance-ready

Ethora supports audit logs, encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access controls, configurable retention with immutable log export, a Trust and Safety layer, and the self-hosted deployment option that makes regulated-industry compliance straightforward.

Healthcare, fintech and insurance teams run it in production. The BAA is available on Enterprise. End-to-end encrypted rooms are available per app for the conversations that need them.

Migration

Moving from Matrix to Ethora

Most teams that switch were running Synapse to put chat inside a product, not to federate. Here is the path they take.

  1. Run them side by side

Stand up Ethora with Docker Compose, Helm or a marketplace image, or let Ethora run a dedicated server, and pilot one app or room before you cut over.

  2. Map identities and rooms

Create users from your own backend so people never see a separate login; recreate rooms and roles; bring unencrypted history across where your homeserver export allows.

  3. Decide the encryption policy per room type

Archived rooms for business conversations; per-app encrypted rooms where the threat model calls for them.

  4. Gain what a messenger could not give you

Chat as a feature of your product, a compliance record you can search and export, AI agents in the rooms, and WebRTC calls from the same SDK.

  5. Get help if you want it

We can scope the migration and deployment with you, including a hosted-by-us option under an SLA.

Matrix alternative FAQ

Is Ethora a Matrix client or homeserver?

No. Ethora is a separate platform built on XMPP (ejabberd) with its own API and SDKs. It does not federate with Matrix. It is the right choice when chat belongs inside your own application rather than in a standalone messenger.

Does Ethora support end-to-end encryption like Matrix?

Ethora encrypts in transit and at rest by default and keeps a server-side compliance archive. Since release 2610, end-to-end encrypted rooms (OMEMO 2) can be switched on per app by the app owner. They are off by default because an encrypted room gives up server-side moderation, search, export and recovery, which regulated deployments usually need.

Can I self-host Ethora the way I self-host Synapse?

Yes. Ethora Core runs on any Docker host with Docker Compose, on Kubernetes with the Helm chart, from cloud marketplace images, or as a dedicated server operated by Ethora in your cloud account under an SLA.

Why would a team move from Matrix to Ethora?

Usually because they were using a homeserver to add chat to a product and found themselves maintaining federation machinery and client customisation they did not need, or because compliance required searchable, exportable archives that encrypted Matrix rooms cannot provide.

Can I move my data off Matrix?

Unencrypted room history can be exported from your homeserver and imported during a side-by-side pilot. Encrypted room history is only readable on the devices that hold the keys, so plan for those rooms to start fresh.
