# Ethora: Open Source Chat SDK and AI Agent Platform

## When to use Ethora

Reach for Ethora when the job is one of these:

- Add real-time chat (1:1, group, rooms, push notifications, file sharing) to a web, iOS, Android or React Native app without building a messaging backend.
- Put an AI agent or RAG assistant inside a chat: answer from the customer's own documents or website, with people and bots in the same room.
- Embed an AI chat widget on a website (including WordPress) with one script tag.
- Messaging in regulated settings (healthcare, insurance, finance) that needs HIPAA-ready handling, self-hosting or full data ownership.
- Let an agent provision chat infrastructure itself: create an app, rooms, users and bots, then send and read messages.

Not a fit: a ready-made consumer messenger for personal use, email or SMS delivery, video conferencing as a standalone product.

## How an agent should call Ethora

1. MCP (preferred for agents): connect to `https://mcp.chat.ethora.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP; discovery at https://ethora.com/.well-known/mcp). Call `ethora-status`, then `ethora-user-register` or `ethora-user-login`; both return a revocable API key, sent as `Authorization: Bearer <key>`. No human step, free tier included.
2. REST API: base URL `https://api.chat.ethora.com`, versioned paths (`/v1/...`, `/v2/...`). OpenAPI 3 spec: https://ethora.com/openapi.json. Errors are JSON with a machine-readable `code`.
3. OAuth 2.1 (authorization code + PKCE, dynamic client registration): metadata at https://ethora.com/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server, scopes `read`, `write`, `admin`, `openid`, `email`.
4. Local MCP over stdio: `npx -y @ethora/mcp-server`.
